When we moved to Kefalonia in 2016, we started helping feed the stray cats during the quiet winter months, when the tourists disappear and survival becomes a daily struggle for so many animals.
But word travels fast when you care — soon we were getting messages about abandoned kittens, injured cats, and desperate cases that wouldn’t survive without help. One rescue led to another, and before long, we had a pride of cats depending on us.
Then everything changed.
We were told that to stay in our rented home, we’d have to give up the cats we’d already rescued. That was never going to happen. We had made a promise to them and we meant it. So, we chose to walk away, knowing it would leave us homeless. Going back to the UK wasn't an option. The cats needed us and we were not going to abandon them.
Just as winter crept in, and we were running out of options, something incredible happened. We were offered a piece of land to live on — and an old caravan to sleep in. It wasn’t much, but it gave us a place to start again.
